Mind & Body
The mind-body approach can be viewed from two perspectives: scientific and metaphysical.
The former consists of documented and rigorously examined connections based on the latest findings in the fields of neuro-science and in particular, psycho-neuro-immunology, a relatively young science, but one that illuminates the incredible potential for shifting the blocks to our physical well-being through the application of progressive and transformational psychology. This sounds a bit “wordy”, but the gist of it is that we cannot ignore the impact on our bodies from our thoughts and feelings. Exploring these connections can be a valuable exercise in itself and a way of accelerating the healing process.
The metaphysical concept of detecting, analyzing and manipulating “energy” changes in the body has a long history, most clearly seen in Traditional Chinese Medicine (e.g. Acupunture theory and practice) and Ayurvedic Theory and more recently in the West as Functional Medicine (click to see page on this).
Drawing on my training and experience of Behavioural Kinesiology, Transformational Psychology, Trauma Releasing, Mindfulness Meditation, Martial Arts and Yoga practice, I have integrated core concepts from these approaches into my Osteopathic and Naturopathic methodology.
The original Behavioural Kinesiology programme presented unique ways to help one uncover the underlying emotional stressors that can lead to and/or maintain disease processes. I use this approach to detect the influences on your personal Life Energy and to help you to discover and utilise your own innate strengths.
Life Energy is the most basic and natural phenomenon in our world, it pervades Nature, it is everywhere around us. It is easy to see it in children and animals, it is that force that resides in us and keeps us healthy and happy.
It is a term used by Dr. John Diamond M.D., but it is a concept with thousands of years of human culture behind it – the Greeks called it thymos, although Hippocrates called it vis medicatrix naturae (the healing power of nature); the Chinese "Chi"; Hindus "Prana"; the Egyptians "Ka". It is called spirit, the vital force we draw in with each breath which animates the acupuncture meridian system.
It is thought that when we are stressed or traumatised there is a diminution of this energy and an imbalance in the body, potentially leading to changes in our health.
Things that stress us cover a wide array of areas, internal as well as external, and can affect our functioning at three levels, the physical, physiological and the psychological. All three need to be addressed before we can make positive and long lasting changes in our lives.
Our goal together, then, would be to raise your Life Energy, to help you to cope with the stresses that can diminish it, and to teach you to recognize those elements in your life that increase it and those that can take it away. In many cases Life Energy can be enhanced, for example, by engaging in or transforming one’s approach to activities such as singing, dancing, creative writing, drawing, painting and other artistic pursuits, as well as sport, and physical activities of all kinds.
Trauma Releasing Exercises and Mindfulness Meditation routines are also invaluable tools for engaging and enhancing your body's ability to heal itself. These methods may form part of my treatment protocol that I will discuss with you during the consultation process.
As Science continues to explore and validate many of the methods evolved from Ancient Wisdom, it would seem reasonable to consider integrating the most valuable of these into our lives by testing their usefulness and relevance.
I am happy to discuss with you how you may wish to do this and thereby deepen your experience of the Mind-Body connection.
